A little “subro” with your morning coffee
Subrogation…aka….”subro”What is that? Why is it important in insurance? It is an awfully big word that you don’t come across very often, right?
Let me give you a little scenario where “subro” will come into play. You wake up one morning, take an extra ten minutes to make a wonderful veggie omelet and actually sit down to eat it and a wonderful coffee. Sit down in the morning? What an idea. You leave for work and blast some holiday music on the way to work and things are going well. All of sudden, you hear squealing breaks behind you and get rear-ended by someone who must not have had their omelet and wonderful coffee yet. Your vehicle isn’t drivable, and you didn’t get the person’s insurance information…only to find out that the police report might take up to a week to come through. You call your own insurance company and get the claim rolling because you need to get places during this busy season. They take excellent care of you and get you back to normal (????). Once your claim is complete, YOUR company will SUBROGATE against the other parties’ insurance company to get their money back.
In a perfect world, it would be a good idea to snap a picture of their insurance ID Card and driver’s license so that you could have potentially gone through their policy. If you had that, you wouldn’t be subject to your deductible, and because there was NO question of fault, their company could accept liability and pay out for damages, rental, etc.
